I hope you’re a patient person, because it looks like we won’t be hearing again from the Doom reboot for some time. Bethesda decided to show off the game exclusively to QuakeCon attendees in an effort to quell rumors that the game and its developer id Software were in trouble. Their strategy seems to have paid off, as those who were able to see the live presentation left starry-eyed.

The news comes from Pete Hines, head of PR and Marketing for Bethesda.

“We’re working with [id Software] to say, ‘How does this work? What do we want to show?’” Hines told PC Gamer. “And they’re like, ‘Look, we don’t want a stream to go up for a game that isn’t at the point where we would formally show it to the world, and now that thing is getting picked apart, and digested, and gone through frame-by-frame and getting nitpicked to death, when normally we wouldn’t be showing this to anybody at all.’”

It’s no secret that the Internet can sometimes be an unwelcome source of criticism, so I understand their not wanting to reveal a game that’s still largely unfinished to such a large and scrutinizing audience.

“I really wanted to put something out there that, in a strong way, said, ‘id is working on something that we think is really cool.’ And we wanted … to show something to [id Software fans] that gives them the confidence that it is still a viable studio that’s doing really cool stuff, that is making a game you want to play, and is treating Doom with the care and respect that you want.” Hines continued.
